A new site in Google: why the first months bring zero clicks, and what to do

The site is live, Search Console is connected, and it shows a few dozen impressions and not a single click. That is not a fault, it is a normal start. But some things shorten it, and some only look like work.

The site has launched. It is fast, good-looking, technically clean. You open Search Console a month later - and there are a few dozen impressions, an average position somewhere on page five, and zero clicks. The first thought: something is broken.

Most likely, nothing is. That is what the start of almost any new domain looks like.

What those numbers mean

Impressions are how many times your page appeared in results, even if nobody scrolled down to it. An average position of 50 is page five of the results, and almost nobody goes there. So zero clicks at that position is not a failure of the writing - it is plain arithmetic.

And the good news is hidden in the impressions themselves. Google already knows your pages, understands what they are about and is trying them against queries. That is the first step. Zero impressions would be the bad news.

Why a new site starts slowly

Google does not tell anyone how long a new site takes to reach decent positions, and it has never officially confirmed a «sandbox». But the logic is clear: a new domain has no history, no links from other sites, no data on how people behave on it. The search engine has nothing to lean on but the text itself, and it is cautious.

A technically perfect site without a single outside link is a lovely business card that nobody passes on.

What genuinely speeds it up

  • A sitemap submitted in Search Console, and indexing requested for the key pages - once, not daily
  • Separate pages for specific queries, rather than one home page «about everything»
  • Outside links: industry directories, company profiles, partners, clients
  • Internal links between pages, so both the crawler and the reader keep going
  • New material on a regular basis, answering questions people actually have

The strongest of these is outside links. Not bought by the bundle, but real ones: a listing in an industry directory, a mention in a partner's article, a line on a client's site saying who built it. Each link like that is a signal that somebody knows you.

What only looks like work

  • Resubmitting the same pages for indexing every day
  • Dozens of articles «about everything», written for keywords rather than for people
  • Bought links from a network of identical sites
  • Endless polishing of meta tags on pages that do not yet have any positions

Especially the last one. When a page sits on page five of the results, the difference between two versions of its description changes nothing. Content and links will.

How to read Search Console at the start

Look at the queries, not the clicks. They show how Google understands you. If they are the queries you actually want to be visible for, you are heading the right way, and those are the pages to strengthen. If something unexpected shows up, it is either a hint about what to write next or a sign that a page is being read differently from how you intended.

And give it time. Compare month with month, not week with week. The first clicks usually come not from the main queries but from long, specific ones - where there is less competition and your page answers more precisely than anyone else's.
